Every summer, emergency veterinary clinics fill with heatstroke cases. Every winter, they see hypothermia, frostbite, and antifreeze poisoning. These are not rare tragedies. They are predictable, preventable, and they happen because owners underestimate how sensitive pets are to temperature extremes. I’ve been guilty of this myself—taking a long walk on a hot day, not realizing that my dog’s paws were burning on asphalt. After years of learning the hard way, here’s what every pet owner needs to know about seasonal safety.

Summer: The Heat Threat

Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans. Dogs have sweat glands only on their paw pads, which is insufficient for cooling. They primarily cool themselves by panting, which evaporates moisture from the tongue and respiratory tract. Cats are even less efficient at cooling—they rarely pant, and their small size means they heat up faster. Both species are vulnerable to heatstroke when ambient temperatures exceed their thermoregulatory capacity.

Asphalt is a particular hazard. When the air temperature is 77°F, asphalt is 125°F. At 86°F, asphalt is 135°F. At 87°F, asphalt is hot enough to cause thermal burns in 60 seconds. A dog’s paws burn on hot pavement just like human feet would. The “5-second rule” is a good guideline: if you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Walk in the morning or evening, or use booties.

Heatstroke in dogs is defined as a body temperature above 103°F. Normal canine temperature is 101-102.5°F. At 104°F, dogs begin to show distress: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting. At 106°F, organ damage begins. At 109°F, death is imminent. The treatment is aggressive cooling (not ice—lukewarm water and wet towels) and immediate veterinary care. Survival rates are 50% for dogs with temperatures over 106°F, even with treatment. Prevention is everything.

Never leave a pet in a parked car. This cannot be repeated enough. On a 70°F day, the interior of a car reaches 100°F in 20 minutes. On a 90°F day, it reaches 160°F. Cracking windows makes no meaningful difference. If you see a pet in a hot car, call 911 or animal control immediately. In many jurisdictions, you have legal immunity to break a window to rescue a pet in distress.

Winter: The Cold Threat

Hypothermia occurs when body temperature drops below normal. In dogs, this is below 99°F. Small dogs, short-coated breeds, and puppies are at highest risk. A dog that is shivering, lethargic, or has pale gums is showing signs of hypothermia. Wrap the dog in blankets and warm with lukewarm water bottles (not hot water—rewarming too quickly can cause cardiac arrhythmias). Seek veterinary care if the temperature doesn’t normalize within 30 minutes.

Frostbite affects the extremities: ears, paws, and tail. It occurs when tissue freezes, causing cellular damage. The danger is that frostbitten tissue may not show signs for several days. The affected area turns pale, then blue, then black as the tissue dies. If you suspect frostbite, do not rub the area (this causes further tissue damage). Wrap in warm, dry towels and seek veterinary care immediately. The risk of frostbite increases dramatically when the wind chill is below 20°F.

Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is a winter toxin that kills pets every year. It has a sweet taste that attracts animals. The lethal dose is approximately 0.5 tablespoons per pound of body weight. For a 10-pound cat, one teaspoon can be fatal. Ethylene glycol causes kidney failure within 24-72 hours. If you spill antifreeze, clean it immediately with absorbent material and dispose of it in a sealed container. There are pet-safe antifreeze alternatives (propylene glycol-based) that are non-toxic and work as well as conventional antifreeze.

Ice melt salts (sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride) irritate paws and are toxic if ingested. Rinse your dog’s paws after winter walks. Use pet-safe ice melts (magnesium chloride or potassium chloride-based) on your property. Booties provide the best protection but require training to acclimate dogs to wearing them.
